Karan Johar Defends Nadaaniyan: 'Words Can Be Violent Too
2 days ago | 5 Views
The Netflix release of Nadaaniyan on March 7 caught a lot of attention, but not for the right reasons. Khushi Kapoor, the daughter of Boney Kapoor and Sridevi, along with Ibrahim Ali Khan, son of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, faced a wave of criticism for their performances in the movie. Many online users took to mocking the film, its storyline, and the acting skills of the star kids involved. Karan Johar, who produced the film through Dharmatic Entertainment, has finally addressed the backlash. At the recent trailer launch for the Punjabi film Akaal, he expressed his discontent with the negative comments directed at Nadaaniyan.
Karan Johar stands up for the movie and its actors
One critic expressed, "I want to trash this film." It seems like these folks are really getting under his skin. He’s open to everything about the industry—trolls, influencers, and social critiques are all fair game. But he feels that the creators of "Nadaaniyan," "Gustakhiyaan," and "Gehraiyaan" are all too similar. When reviewers write like that, their opinions end up saying more about them than the actual film.
Johar points out that people who are quick to criticize and lash out often forget that their targets might be someone's kids. He suggests that these so-called intellectual movie fans should develop a more compassionate approach, since nobody likes dealing with aggression. While fencing is a form of physical aggression, it's important to remember that words can hurt just as deeply. Those who resort to violence should definitely be held accountable.
Support for young actors comes from different voices in the industry
Several people, including Hansal Mehta, Vikram Bhatt, and Sonu Sood, have come forward to defend the star kids, arguing that the audience is being too tough on them. Mehta pointed out that criticizing the film feels inappropriate and shared with ETimes his worry that the young actors might be going through a tough time.
Vikram Bhatt also spoke highly of Ibrahim's dad, Saif Ali Khan, and mentioned that he couldn't spot any flaws in Ibrahim's performance. He appreciates both Khushi and Ibrahim, so he doesn't understand the backlash the film is facing. Whether the movie is good or not doesn't change the fact that Ibrahim was enjoyable to watch. The ongoing discussion about nepotism is tough, and it seems unfair to expect newcomers to be outstanding right from the start, especially since this is Ibrahim's first film.
Bhatt posed a question on Galatta, asking, "Who really shined in their first film?" He added that you can tell the actor has talent just by watching them perform. The filmmaker is feeling down about the situation.
Nadaaniyan also represents Shauna Gautam's first venture as a director.
