Karan Johar Calls for a Change in Gender Politics: ‘Women-Led Films Are Outperforming Big Male Stars’

Filmmaker Karan Johar emphasizes the necessity for society to recognize the significance of gender representation in cinema. In a recent interview, he highlighted that films led by female characters are increasingly achieving higher box office numbers compared to those led by male characters, a trend that cannot be overlooked.

Karan opines

Karan articulated his perspective during a discussion on Lilly Singh’s podcast, where he was prompted to address the relevance of sensitivity towards gender issues in film.

In response, Karan stated, “If we can align our politics correctly… I am not suggesting that entertainment should be sacrificed. Cinema is designed for grand entertainment, visual splendour, and the joy of experience, all of which can be achieved without endorsing flawed political views. It is possible to engage a wide audience across the country without promoting incorrect gender politics or social norms. Adhering to fundamental principles is essential. Regrettably, there is no external censorship that can rectify this; it must come from within. A film may achieve commercial success despite lacking proper communication, but whether that is ultimately beneficial is questionable.”

The filmmaker expressed his satisfaction when films like Stree 2 and Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi achieved success at the box office.

He remarked, “When Alia starred in Gangubai Kathiawadi, it represented a significant triumph in cinema for me. The character was entirely propelled by her performance, and it garnered larger audiences than many prominent male stars. This is a substantial indication that a woman can successfully lead a film. While men often discuss pay equity and argue for higher compensation due to their ability to generate revenue, we are witnessing a time when films led by women are opening to much greater numbers than those of some major male stars, who are experiencing disappointing box office results.”

Upcoming Projects for Karan

Currently, Karan is engaged with his forthcoming project, Nadaaniyan, which will introduce Saif Ali Khan’s son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, to the entertainment industry. Ibrahim will appear alongside Khushi Kapoor in this film, which is set to be released directly on Netflix. Additionally, this film will mark the directorial debut of Shauna Gautam, who previously served as an assistant director to Karan Johar on Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Karan’s recent production, Jigra, which he co-produced with Alia Bhatt and featured her in the lead role, did not perform well at the box office.
