Kapil Sharma's Parents' Kabaddi Joke Resurfaces Amid India's Got Talent Row

An archival video featuring Kapil Sharma has emerged online in the wake of the controversy surrounding Ranveer Allahbadia's remarks on India's Got Latent. This particular clip, originating from 2023, is taken from Kapil's The Kapil Sharma Show aired on Sony. It has garnered over 3 million views on Instagram within a span of less than 24 hours.
Resurfaced video
The video was shared on the Instagram account @x.memez1 on Wednesday, featuring Kapil humorously commenting on the enthusiasm for cricket among the youth. In his opening segment for the episode aired on February 19, 2023, Kapil remarked that while students often complain about the need to rise early for exam preparation, they readily do so for an early cricket match. He stated, “Some fans are so dedicated that they wake up at 2 a.m. for a match that starts at 4 a.m. They end up watching their parents engage in wrestling before going back to sleep.” The clip captures the astonished reactions of the audience and guest Archana Puran Singh.
In the original footage, which can be found on SET India's channel, Kapil further elaborated on his statement, saying, “I mean, parents are often fighting.”
In a recent post, @x.memez1 questioned, “Why was this issue not addressed?” The accompanying video garnered numerous comments, with many expressing their astonishment that the joke had gone unnoticed for two years, while others came to Kapil's defence. One comment stated, “And people say this is a family show.” Another remarked, “I held Kapil Sharma in high regard, but no matter how inappropriate his jokes may be, he faces no criticism because he has the entire Bollywood backing him. However, if an independent or self-made individual were to do the same, the entire nation would turn against them (Kapil Sharma's show is a family show, while the latent content is more adult-oriented, and there is a disclaimer at the beginning of the show).”
Another individual commented, “This was just a joke; laughter is essential, but at times it can cross into vulgarity.” They added, “If he does it, it’s comedy; if someone else does it, it’s vulgarity.”
Others argued that Kapil's humor was more nuanced, suggesting that just because one person makes a joke does not grant permission for others to do the same. “There is a distinction between saying something directly and indirectly; that is also referred to as 'limits,'” one commenter noted.
What's India's Got Latent controversy
The dispute arose following Allahbadia's comment in a recent episode of the program, which was poorly received by the audience. During the broadcast, he posed a question to a contestant: "Would you prefer to watch your parents... or participate once and end it permanently?"
In response to the ensuing criticism, a formal complaint was lodged against Ranveer Allahbadia, social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, comedian Samay Raina, and the organizers of India's Got Latent.
