Kapil Sharma Responds to Controversy After Joking About Atlee: 'You Be the Judge'

Renowned filmmaker Atlee recently made an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show to promote his forthcoming film, Baby John, featuring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi. However, the episode has encountered criticism, as some social media users took issue with a question posed by Kapil Sharma regarding Atlee's appearance. In light of the backlash, Kapil has addressed the allegations, asserting that he did not intend to insult Atlee and encouraging viewers to watch the segment and form their own opinions.

Kapil Sharma denies insulting Atlee

On December 17, Kapil Sharma addressed a post from a social media user on X (formerly Twitter), which stated, “Kapil Sharma subtly insults Atlee’s looks? Atlee responds like a boss: Don’t judge by appearance, judge by the heart. #Atlee #KapilSharma." The tweet included a video of Atlee's exchange with Kapil Sharma during the show.

In his response, Kapil Sharma remarked, “Dear sir, could you please clarify when and where I commented on looks in this video? Kindly refrain from spreading negativity on social media. Thank you. (Everyone, please watch and form your own opinion, rather than blindly following someone else's tweet.)”

What did Kapil Sharma say at the TGIKS episode?

During the episode, Kapil inquired of Atlee whether there had been an instance when he met a star for the first time and was not recognized.

Atlee replied, “I believe I grasped your question. I will attempt to respond. I am genuinely grateful to AR Murugadoss sir, as he was the producer of my debut film. He requested a script without considering my appearance or my capabilities. However, he appreciated my narration. I believe it is essential for the world to witness that. We should not make judgments based on appearances; rather, we should assess from the heart.”

This statement did not resonate well with some social media users, who criticized Kapil Sharma for allegedly 'insulting' the filmmaker.

In the meantime, directed by Kalees, Baby John is an adaptation of Atlee's 2016 Tamil film Theri. The film, produced by Jio Studios, Cine1 Studios, and A for Apple Productions, is set to be released on December 25, 2024.
