Kanye West Pushes for Trial Extension, Blames Media Scrutiny and Legal Struggles
2 months ago | 5 Views
Kanye West has petitioned a judge in Los Angeles to postpone his forthcoming trial against his former employee, Tony Saxon, citing challenges in obtaining legal representation attributed to "negative media coverage." As reported by In Touch, the rapper, via his attorney Manoj Shah, has requested that the trial, presently set for February 24, be delayed.
West requests court trial be postponed
Tony Saxon initiated his discrimination lawsuit against Kanye West in September 2023. In July 2024, Kanye's previous attorney, Brian Brumfield, withdrew from representing him in court. At that time, Brian stated, “[Ye] terminated the relationship on 6/21/2024. [Ye] also will not speak to counsel and [Ye] refuses to pay counsel as well.”
West’s attorney elaborated that the rapper encountered significant challenges in securing litigation counsel due to overwhelmingly negative media coverage of the defendants, as reported by InTouch. Shah noted, “Defendants were unable to retain counsel.” He mentioned that West has recently engaged a new attorney, Eduardo Martorell, to manage his ongoing legal issues. Shah indicated that Eduardo has assumed the role of lead counsel in several of West’s active cases.
Nevertheless, Shah also remarked that Eduardo requires additional time, emphasizing that “Ye’s extreme difficulties with retention of trial counsel” were discussed at a recent hearing. He assured the court that the rapper was ready to work with Eduardo as his attorney for this case and that Eduardo was willing to take on the case, but only if the court could postpone the trial date and all associated deadlines. West and his legal team requested that the court reschedule the trial to August or to the next available date thereafter.
Tony Saxon accuses West of discrimination
Saxon has previously alleged that the rapper engaged in discriminatory practices and retaliatory actions in the lawsuit. He indicated that his employment with West spanned from September 2021 to November 2021, during which he served as a full-time security guard at West's former residence in Malibu, California. In the lawsuit, Saxon asserted that he was compelled to sleep on the floor due to the absence of beds. He further claimed that he was promised a weekly compensation of $20,000 for his services. According to Saxon, his termination occurred after he declined to meet certain demands, prompting him to initiate a lawsuit based on discrimination.
