Kangana Ranaut's Fall from Grace: No Hits and 93% Box Office Loss in Ten Years
2 months ago | 5 Views
Kangana Ranaut used to be celebrated as the top female actor of her time in Hindi films. Her talent is still impressive, but her box office appeal has taken a hit over the years. Even with several National Awards and a history of success, she hasn't had a major hit in nearly ten years. Early indications suggest that her latest film, Emergency, is unlikely to change that pattern.
Kangana Ranaut once ruled Bollywood as its 'Queen.'
From 2011 to 2015, Kangana was on fire. She headlined a bunch of films without needing a big male co-star, and they all crushed it at the box office. With hits like Queen, Tanu Weds Manu, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, she set the record for the highest-grossing female-led Bollywood films three times. No one had pulled that off before, and no one has since. But that was the peak for her. Most movie fans thought she’d just keep climbing, especially at 28. Unfortunately, a mix of bad luck, poor decisions, and drama took a toll on her later projects.
Kangana Ranaut's movies over the past decade
Kangana has been pretty busy since Tanu Weds Manu Returns, appearing in 11 films, with Emergency being the latest release just last week. Unfortunately, none of these films have really taken off at the box office, and aside from one, they've all flopped. Her last two films before Emergency, Tejas and Dhaakad, were labeled as disasters because they made almost nothing. The only film that did reasonably well for her in the past decade is Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi. This 2019 biopic about Rani Laxmibai raked in ₹92 crore nett in India and ₹133 crore globally, but because it had a hefty budget, it wasn't considered a total success and ended up being an average performer.
Kangana Ranaut has been on a bit of a slim trend lately
Kangana had a couple of films that did pretty well at the box office before the pandemic, like Manikarnika and Panga. However, since Covid hit, her movies have really struggled to attract audiences. Before Emergency, her last three releases—Tejas, Dhaakad, and Thalaivi—were all major flops. Together, these films had a hefty budget of ₹255 crore, but they only managed to rake in ₹17 crore at the box office, which is a staggering 93% shortfall compared to what was spent. Dhaakad, which had an ₹85-crore budget, was the biggest disappointment, pulling in just ₹3 crore globally.

Can Emergency change the game?
Kangana Ranaut aimed for Emergency to be her big masterpiece. As the director, she had full creative freedom, and the topic was definitely timely. However, the final product didn't quite live up to expectations. With a budget of around ₹60 crore, the film is barely scraping together ₹15 crore in its first week. It's looking pretty unlikely that it will even make back its costs, adding to Kangana's streak of disappointments.
