Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency defended by CBFC appointed historian: ‘Does Bhindranwale represent the entire Sikh community?’

The dark clouds surrounding Kangana Ranaut's Emergency have been evident for a while. The movie, originally slated for release on September 6, was postponed indefinitely after the makers failed to secure a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC suggested some changes and cuts before they would provide the certification. However, this tug of war-delayed the release, and the Kangana-starrer, which she also directed, still doesn't have a confirmed release date. Recently, Ranaut claimed she is suffering financial losses due to the delay. However, she is now seeing some relief as a CBFC-appointed historian has spoken in favor of the film, calling it a sympathetic take on this episode of Indian history.

Historian Backs Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency

If you're confused about the involvement of a historian, the CBFC filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court requesting that Emergency be allowed to release, albeit with the suggested cuts. The affidavit mentions historian Makkhan Lal as the subject expert. After members of the Sikh community raised objections to the Kangana Ranaut-starrer, the CBFC convened a review committee. Makkhan Lal has now come out in support of the film.

Emergency tells the story of Indira Gandhi during her tenure as Prime Minister of India, leading up to her assassination. Supporting the movie, Makkhan Lal, in an interview with India Today, called it factual and said it does not portray Gandhi in a negative light. "The film is entirely based on facts, and they haven’t altered the truth. I would say the filmmakers are very sympathetic to the issue depicted. While every political leader has flaws, the film does not show the negative aspects of Indira Gandhi’s character,” he said.

About the Bhindranwale Controversy

One of the key scenes in the Emergency trailer that sparked controversy on social media involves Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Makkhan Lal addressed this in his comments as well. He questions whether Bhindranwale represents the entire Sikh community and why criticizing him is seen as an insult to the community.

He said, “Does Bhindranwale represent the entire Sikh community? If so, why do other figures from the community, such as former Congress Chief Minister Beant Singh or Parkash Singh Badal, differ from him? Why is criticizing Bhindranwale seen as an insult to the Sikh community? Who shot Mrs. Indira Gandhi? If they were Sikhs, that is a fact. How can this be denied?”

Emergency is still awaiting a CBFC certificate and a new release date.
