The "another day, another controversy" mode has been switched on yet again, and netizens seem to have found new fodder after a brief break. Anubhav Sinha's IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a show that opened to great reviews, with the filmmaker praised for his eye for detail and nuanced storytelling. However, eagle-eyed netizens soon realized that the filmmaker had named two terrorists involved in the hijacking as Shankar and Bhola (their code names). This did not sit well with a segment of the audience, leading to calls for a ban and boycott of the show and Netflix. Now, Kangana Ranaut has decided to weigh in on the already burning controversy.
Kangana Ranaut on the IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack Row
In IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, the terrorists address each other by code names, with two of them given Hindu names. They are called Bhola and Shankar, which are, of course, their code names to conceal their real identities from the people on the flight. This decision hasn't gone down well with some netizens, who accuse Anubhav Sinha of "whitewashing." However, others are defending it by sharing screenshots confirming that the hijackers did, in fact, use these names. Read on to learn more.
Kangana Ranaut, who is already in the news for her upcoming film Emergency—which she directs and stars in as the late former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi—has now shared her opinion. She retweeted a post slamming IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments. In her reaction, the actress accused the system of having selective censorship against those who do not wish to break the nation. She also called this row demotivating and unjust.
Kangana Ranaut wrote, "Law of the land is that one can show unimaginable amounts of violence and nudity on OTT platforms without any consequence or censorship. One can even distort real-life events to suit their politically motivated sinister motives. There is all the freedom for communists or leftists across the world for such anti-national expressions, but as a nationalist, no OTT platform allows us to make films that revolve around the integrity and unity of Bharat. It seems censorship is only for some of us who don’t want tukde of this nation and make films on historic facts. It’s hugely demotivating and unjust."
Emergency Pushed
Meanwhile, according to reports, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has now been pushed to a new date, which is yet to be revealed. The film was initially set to release on September 6, 2024. Recently, it was also reported that the movie has yet to receive a censor certificate, as the officers at the certification board have been receiving death threats, as claimed by Ranaut herself in her Instagram story. We are now awaiting a new release date for the film. Stay tuned to Mobile Masala for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
