Kangana Ranaut on South Cinema's Rise: 'Bollywood Focused on Abs and Glamour'

Kangana Ranaut has shared her insights regarding the recent phenomenon of South Indian films surpassing Bollywood films in box office performance. The actress attributes this disparity to a significant factor: many Hindi films have increasingly strayed from authentic representations of reality.
Kangana expresses her perspective.
During a session at Agenda Aaj Tak, Kangana was inquired about the factors contributing to the remarkable success of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa franchise, particularly about the current state of Bollywood.
"Firstly, I do not believe that Bollywood or Hindi cinema can be considered mainstream. By any measure, they do not represent the mainstream. Our films should be recognized as part of the Indian film industry, which encompasses a diverse range of audiences," Kangana stated.
Kangana analyzed the success of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2, highlighting his portrayal of a daily wage worker.
"Individuals in Bollywood exist within a bubble, and this is a significant reason for my concerns regarding them. They are reluctant to step outside of this bubble. Their focus is primarily on gym workouts, protein shakes, and injections, which disconnects them from reality," she remarked.
Kangana further asserted that no one in Bollywood would have accepted the role that Allu Arjun embodies in the film.
"They seek six-pack abs, attractive women, beaches, motorcycles, and item numbers. That is sufficient for them... It is crucial to have a reality check," she concluded.
The Pushpa franchise encompasses a series of films and related media that have garnered significant attention and acclaim.
Pushpa: The Rise premiered in 2021 and achieved remarkable success across India. The film earned over ₹136 crore in the Telugu language and an additional ₹106 crore net from its Hindi-dubbed version. It became the highest-grossing film for Allu Arjun to date. The film, along with its soundtrack, gained significant traction in regions where Hindi is predominantly spoken.
Currently, Allu Arjun, alongside Rashmika Mandanna, has returned with Pushpa 2: The Rule. This sequel continues the narrative, depicting Pushpa Raj's ascent as he takes control of the red sanders smuggling operation after rising from a position as a daily wage labourer. Rashmika portrays his wife, Srivalli, who supports him against his estranged family. Fahadh Faasil reprises his role as the police officer Bhanwar Singh Shekawat, who is still grappling with the disgrace he endured in Pushpa: The Rise. The film concludes by laying the groundwork for a new storyline in Pushpa 3: The Rampage.
