Kangana Ranaut Sets the Record Straight on Direction Claims: "Stop the Nonsense!"
2 months ago | 5 Views
Kangana Ranaut opened up in a recent episode of Indian Idol 15. When she was asked if she decided to direct her upcoming biopic on Indira Gandhi, titled Emergency, because other directors weren’t fans of her input, she had some interesting thoughts to share.
Kangana Ranaut talks about her experience directing Emergency
A contestant named Manasi Ghosh approached Kangana and expressed her admiration, saying she’s a big fan. She then brought up something she’d heard in interviews, asking, “I’ve noticed that some directors say you tend to meddle a lot with their direction and scripts, and that they don’t really enjoy collaborating with you. Is that why you chose to direct your own films?”
Kangana took it all in good humor and responded, “Let’s put an end to all this drama… you know what that means, right? If there’s no one around, the flute won’t play,” suggesting that the root of the issue needs to be addressed. She chuckled and continued, “That’s not the case at all. I have a lot of respect for everyone I’ve collaborated with. They’ve inspired me, and I’ve been lucky to work with some fantastic directors. Films like Queen, Tanu Weds Manu, Fashion, and Gangster are celebrated for their amazing storytelling. That’s what pushed me to dive into filmmaking myself.”
Kangana also mentioned that it’s perfectly fine if she doesn’t connect with one or two out of the ten people she’s worked with. “You don’t need to change who you are to be liked by everyone. I started my journey in 2005, and now it’s 2025, but there are still only a few, maybe five or six directors, actresses, and actors who have really made a mark. You keep grinding around them. So I thought, why not nurture new talent?”
Here's the scoop on her new movie, Emergency
Kangana may have been a co-director on the 2019 film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, but Emergency marks her first time in the director's chair. She not only directed the film but also acted in it, wrote the script, and co-produced it. The cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Satish Kaushik.
While discussing the film on a show, she mentioned, “If you check out Emergency, you’ll notice we’ve brought together some incredible talent from around the globe. Our director of photography has an Oscar under his belt, my prosthetic makeup artist is top-notch, and I’ve got National Award winners like Anupam Ji and Shreyas on board. Plus, my script consultant is one of the best in the country. Sometimes, I feel let down by our own films, but after two decades in the industry, I thought it was time to do something different. It’s not that I lack collaborators—I just wanted to bring something new to the table.”
