Kangana Ranaut notably referred to Karan Johar as the “flag-bearer of nepotism” during her appearance on his talk show, Koffee with Karan, in 2017. She expressed that she perceives the filmmaker as the antagonist in her prospective biopic. Despite this, Kangana asserts her desire to include Karan in her directorial project, albeit in a significantly positive role.
What Kangana said
During her recent appearance on the singing reality show Indian Idol 15, Kangana was inquired about the possibility of acting in a film produced by Karan's banner, Dharma Productions, amidst their ongoing feud. Kangana responded with laughter, stating, "I regret to inform you, but Karan Johar sir should consider making a film with me. I would provide him with a substantial role and create a quality film that transcends typical saas-bahu dramas and mere public relations efforts. It would be a genuine cinematic endeavour, and he would receive a meaningful part."
In 2017, Kangana made an appearance on an episode of Koffee with Karan season 5, accompanied by her Rangoon co-stars Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor. During the well-known Rapid Fire segment, Karan posed a question to Kangana regarding who she would identify as the villain in her biopic. In a surprising turn, she pointed at him and declared, “The flag-bearer of nepotism,” leaving him visibly taken aback. Subsequently, Karan defended himself by stating that, although he maintained composure as a host, no other contemporary film producer has introduced as many new directors through his production company. He emphasized that his decision not to collaborate with Kangana was a matter of personal choice, rather than a reflection of her status as an outsider.
Kangana's next
Kangana will next portray former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in her first solo directorial project, titled Emergency. This political thriller, set in a historical context, is produced by her production company, Manikarnika Films, in collaboration with Zee Studios. The film features a cast that includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhary, and Milind Soman, among others. It is centred around the Emergency declared in 1975 by the then-prime minister. Emergency is scheduled to premiere in theaters on January 17.
In the meantime, Karan is preparing to make his directorial debut in a long-format series for Netflix India.
