The 18-year-old triumphed over China's Ding Liren following an arduous tournament spanning 14 days of matches, thus earning the title of the youngest undisputed world chess champion. The Chinese grandmaster had claimed the world championship title the previous year by defeating Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi in the rapid playoffs held in Kazakhstan.
