1 month ago | 5 Views
Actor and BJP leader Kangana Ranaut is recognized for her candidness, and she has recently criticized media reports for failing to acknowledge the 'traditional Ladakhi goncha.' Through a series of Instagram Stories, Kangana elaborated on goncha, the customary attire worn by Ladakhi women.
Kangana wears traditional Ladakhi attire, goncha
Kangana donned the traditional Ladakhi garment, goncha, which serves as a stunning representation of Ladakh's rich cultural heritage. She showcased this attire while sharing images from her newly inaugurated café in Manali, The Mountain Story.
Here's what she wore:
Kangana expressed her disappointment that media outlets did not provide accurate information regarding her traditional goncha—a long, woolen robe that extends to the ankles, typically crafted from thick, warm wool to shield against the severe Ladakhi climate.
She emphasized the importance of respecting, understanding, and being open to learning about local traditional garments, such as goncha, which she believes can surpass the beauty of international gowns or designer dresses.

‘Goncha can look more beautiful than gowns’
In response to a news article discussing her recent appearance, Kangana stated on Instagram Stories, “It is utterly embarrassing that these so-called fashion bloggers lack knowledge, understanding, or respect for mountain communities, their culture, or traditions; not everything is anarkali. Not one article referred to this garment as the traditional Ladakhi goncha. This is both unfair and culturally insensitive.”
In her subsequent Instagram Stories, she included images of Ladakhi women adorned in the traditional goncha, remarking, “For those unfamiliar, this is Ladakhi goncha, also known as kos or suleman... goncha can indeed be more beautiful than international gowns or branded dresses. We must advocate for our local traditional attires. India has an abundance to offer, and we must acknowledge that.” Kangana concluded with the hashtag 'vocal for local.'
More about goncha
Gonchas are characterized by elaborate designs and patterns, such as stripes, geometric shapes, and motifs inspired by Buddhism. Their vivid colors enhance the richness and aesthetic appeal of the garment. Additionally, the goncha is significantly shaped by Tibetan culture, highlighting the historical connections between Ladakh and Tibet.
Ladakhi women typically accessorize the goncha with traditional jewelry, which includes necklaces, earrings, and bracelets crafted from silver, gold, and precious stones. A belt is also worn to secure the goncha at the waist.
