
Kangana Ranaut Breaks Silence on 'Emergency' Controversy and Global Protests

Actor Kangana Ranaut has addressed the absence of her recent film, Emergency, from the Punjab market. On Monday, she took to Instagram to share a video in which she also commented on the protests occurring in Canada and Britain regarding her film. The video commenced with Kangana expressing her appreciation for the support received for Emergency.
Kangana on Emergency not releasing in Punjab
The actress remarked, "You have shown immense love and respect for our film. We are at a loss for words to convey our gratitude for this affection." She further stated, "However, there remains a pain in my heart. Punjab. It has been said within the industry that my films perform exceptionally well in Punjab. Yet today, my film is not even permitted to release there."
Kangana speaks about protests, attacks
She continued, "Similar attacks are occurring in Canada and Britain as well. A few individuals, some select individuals, have ignited this fire. Both you and I are suffering in this blaze."
"My beliefs and my connection to my country are reflected in this film. I encourage you to watch it and determine whether it unites us or divides us," she concluded.
Kangana wrapped up the video by stating, "I will not elaborate further. Thank you." In sharing the clip, she captioned it, "Deep gratitude for all the love for Emergency. In cinemas now."
Protests in India, abroad over Emergency
The film Emergency was not shown in cinemas across Punjab on its release date due to widespread protests organized by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and various Sikh organizations, who opposed the film and called for its prohibition. The SGPC, which is the leading gurdwara authority, along with several Sikh groups, conducted demonstrations outside theaters, multiplexes, and shopping malls throughout the state.
According to a report from the news agency ANI, referencing the British Hindu and Indian social movement Insight UK, a faction of pro-Khalistan extremists disrupted a cinema screening in Harrow, London, in an effort to halt the showing of Emergency.
About Emergency
Released on January 17, the film depicts the emergency period declared by Indira Gandhi, which lasted for 21 months from 1975 to 1977, marking a contentious and pivotal era in Indian political history. The narrative delves into the political upheaval and societal consequences of the emergency, featuring Kangana in the role of Indira Gandhi. The cast also includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik.
