Kangana Ranaut Backs Indian Family in 'Mrs' Debate, Internet Accuses Her of Feeling Threatened by Sanya Malhotra
1 month ago | 5 Views
Actor Kangana Ranaut addressed the concept of marriage and Indian family values in an extensive social media post on Saturday. This commentary coincided with ongoing discussions surrounding the film "Mrs," featuring Sanya Malhotra, which explores a woman's experiences post-marriage. Although Kangana did not explicitly mention the film, her remarks were shared on Reddit, where some users accused her of attempting to undermine Sanya.
In her Instagram Stories on Saturday, Kangana urged her audience to refrain from "demonising elderly individuals and equating homemakers with paid workers." She further asserted that Bollywood's portrayal of "love stories has distorted the true essence of marriage," emphasizing that it should reflect traditional values upheld in the country. This statement sparked a backlash from certain individuals, with one Reddit post labelling her a "supreme hypocrite."
Kangana shared that her mother too commanded the house
The actor remarked that during her upbringing, she observed that every woman in her household exercised authority over the home, dictating when family members should eat, sleep, and go out. She would inquire about every expenditure made by her husband, who felt compelled to comply. The only points of contention arose from the men's outings and their frequent evenings of drinking with friends. Whenever her father wished to dine out with the family, she would reprimand everyone, as cooking for them brought her joy and allowed her to maintain control over various aspects, including hygiene and nutrition. The elder family members served as caregivers for her children and provided emotional support.
She further expressed that the women in her family—grandmother, mother, and aunt—are regarded as the ultimate queens, and she aspires to emulate them. While acknowledging that there are instances of women's devaluation, she urged against generalizing the dynamics of Indian joint families and demonizing the elderly. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of not comparing the roles of homemakers with those of paid labourers, nor equating the joy of nurturing a home and raising children with forced labour.

Kangana criticizes Bollywood for misrepresenting the concept of marriage. She emphasizes that marriage should not be viewed as a means for seeking attention or validation; rather, it serves the best interests of the vulnerable, particularly the elderly and newborns, who are both in need of protection. According to her, traditional texts support this view, highlighting that previous generations, including our parents, acted selflessly for the benefit of their children and elders without questioning the established norms.
Kangana blames Bollywood
Numerous Bollywood romantic narratives have misrepresented the concept of marriage. Marriages should reflect the traditional values upheld in this country, which have always been grounded in purpose—specifically, Dharma, signifying duty. The essence is simple: fulfil your responsibilities and proceed with life, as it is fleeting and swift. Seeking excessive validation or attention may ultimately lead to solitude and reliance on therapy, she remarked.
Kangana further referenced ancient scriptures, urging individuals not to undermine social institutions such as marriage. She emphasized that our greatest strengths lie in our joint families and cautioned against endorsing divorce or encouraging younger generations to neglect their elderly parents or forgo having children. As a nation, we must remain anchored in our ancient wisdom to achieve our future aspirations.
Reddit isn't happy with Kangana
Several individuals on Reddit expressed criticism towards her for targeting Sanya Malhotra. Many questioned her decision to focus on her film career rather than marrying and managing household responsibilities. One user remarked, "She is simply afraid that another curly-haired actress will take her place. She did the same with Taapsee and now with Sanya."
Another comment stated, "If she values the institution of marriage, why has she engaged with married men? She should be preparing ciabatta chutney and dum biryani instead of pursuing acting." A Reddit user noted, "This is the reason she lacks support. Just a few days ago, Sanya was praising her."
"Wasn't she recently promoting her new café? Now she seems to discourage people from dining out and advocates for home-cooked meals," questioned another commenter. "If the joy of feeding people at home is so profound, why did she choose to leave and become an actress to earn her own income?" another user commented. "Why doesn’t she marry, have children, care for her parents, and cook instead of dining out? She should set an example and fulfil her responsibilities. Kangana is like a chameleon; her beliefs and statements shift based on what benefits her at any given moment," read another remark.

However, she ultimately challenges her subjugation. Directed by Arati Kadav, this film is an adaptation of the acclaimed Malayalam movie The Great Indian Kitchen. Available for streaming on ZEE5, it also includes performances by Nishant Dahiya and Kanwaljit Singh.
