Mani Ratnam's Nayakan, featuring Kamal Haasan in the principal role, is a monumental crime drama that tells the story of Velu Naicker. Remarkably, the innovative director and the legendary Kamal Haasan did not work together on any projects following the 1987 release of Nayakan until they reunited for the forthcoming Thug Life. Kamal Haasan, the star of Nayakan, has now commented on this prolonged hiatus and the reasons behind the absence of collaboration between these two titans of Tamil cinema.
Kamal Haasan on reunting with Mani Ratnam after so long
Thug Life is among the most eagerly awaited films in Tamil cinema, marking the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after over thirty years. At an event to launch the first single from Thug Life, the star of Dasavatharam discussed the significant gap between Nayakan and the forthcoming gangster action-drama.

Reflecting on the enduring friendship between the two icons, Kamal Haasan noted that their relationship has remained unchanged since the release of 'Nayakan' in 1987.
He emphasized that they maintain regular communication, often discussing various aspects of cinema. While acknowledging their ambitious aspirations, Kamal Haasan admitted that financial constraints and market dynamics frequently limit their projects. “The reason we haven’t collaborated until now is our oversight. The reason we are reuniting is due to you,” he expressed to the audience at the star-studded event in Chennai on April 18.
