Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin shared her experience of a sexist remark from a producer during an interview with BBC World Service. He suggested that she should consider getting fillers for her laughter lines. Kalki expressed her comfort with her natural wrinkles and her lack of interest in changing her appearance.
Kalki Koechlin on a producer asking her to get fillers
In recounting the incident, Kalki mentioned that the producer, while joking about his ex-girlfriend's (a well-known actress) heavy use of Botox, made the comment about her needing fillers. She recalled her reaction: “He was like, ‘All you need is a little filler for your laughter line.’ I felt like stabbing him with my fork—we were at lunch. However, I restrained myself and replied, ‘Well, I’d better stop smiling and laughing so much.’ My approach has been to take such comments lightly and maintain a sense of humor about it.”
Kalki emphasized the increasing pressure women face, exacerbated by social media and unrealistic beauty ideals. Nevertheless, she noted a positive trend, with more women choosing to pursue careers later in life, particularly after raising children. She recognized the challenging phase of juggling work, family, and aging parents but found inspiration in stories of women in their 50s and 60s who are seizing new opportunities and embarking on new careers.
Kalki on being comfortable with wrinkles on her face
Kalki voiced her concerns regarding the pressure on young individuals, especially those in their twenties, to modify their appearances at a young age, which can lead to hasty decisions about their looks. She also emphasized her acceptance of aging, stating, “Now there's a new layer that has come in – age. And the fact that I have wrinkles and that I'm still in front of the camera. So those wrinkles are very much prominent. I personally don't want to do anything to my face, so I've got to be comfortable with that.”
