Family Matters, a Korean drama that infuses supernatural elements into familial relationships, has been selected as the sole representative from Korea for the 2025 Series Mania Festival in France later this month. This groundbreaking series, which delves into non-biological connections, gained significant recognition following its premiere in November 2024, despite being available only on the South Korean subscription service, Coupang Play.
Now, the acclaimed K-drama is exclusively accessible to Indian viewers through Channel K, a new add-on subscription on Prime Video aimed at enhancing the availability of Korean entertainment for Indian fans. We had the privilege of hearing from one of its prominent actors.
In a direct message to his supporters, Park Solomon, also known as Lomon, who portrays Baek Ji Hoon in Family Matters, shared his insights with HindustanTimes.com after the series' launch in India. We extend our gratitude to the Interactive Media Mix (IMX) team for facilitating this connection with the cherished K-drama star.
For those unfamiliar, the original drama from Coupang Play boasts impressive ratings of 8.6 and 8 stars on MyDramaList and IMDb, respectively. Channel K outlines the storyline as follows: “A group with special abilities pretends to be a family to evade criminals, confronting challenges posed by their extraordinary powers and the dangers that surround them." The main cast of the six-episode series includes Lomon, Bae Doona, Ryo Seung Beom, Baek Yoo Shik, and Lee Su Hyun.
Family Matters, a must-watch K-drama for Indian audiences?
Lomon expressed strong confidence in the ability of Family Matters to resonate with Indian viewers. He emphasized its status as a "must-watch" series, noting that while it is also achieving significant success in Korea, its world-building, tension, and themes will be perceived as "very fresh and engaging" across different cultures.
The standout from All of Us Are Dead highlighted that his collaboration with seasoned Korean actors enhances the appealing formula that has captivated Hallyu fans, leaving them eagerly anticipating the series' future.
Additionally, the charismatic actor recognized that the concept of family serves as a vital cornerstone of India's cultural heritage. "I believe that watching this series will prompt reflections on the true meaning of family," he remarked. "I hope that audiences in both South Korea and India will come together to enjoy Family Matters."
What sets Lomon's Baek Ji Hoon apart?
Lomon has emerged as a remarkable presence on the silver screen, particularly noted for his role in Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead. However, he has also been a vital part of several beloved K-drama ensembles, such as Revenge of Others and Sweet Revenge.
Last year, he showcased his diverse acting abilities through a series of comically engaging body-swap antics in U+ Mobile TV’s Branding in Seongsu, alongside Kim Ji Eun, perfectly timed for the 2024 Valentine’s season. Subsequently, he underwent a striking transformation in Family Matters, demonstrating his willingness to embrace challenging roles.
With the excitement surrounding the action-packed thriller still resonating with audiences, anticipation is building for his upcoming 2025 project, a fantasy rom-com titled Human from Today, in collaboration with Kim Hye Yoon, which is already creating significant buzz.
Lomon candidly expressed the distinctiveness of his portrayal of Baek Ji Hoon in Family Matters, despite frequently transitioning between various characters with the changing seasons. He remarked, “Previously, my roles have typically embodied a more serious, responsible, and subdued essence. However, this time, I experienced a much lighter and more unpredictable charm.”
Lomon is ready to play the villain
The rising star has already demonstrated his exceptional talent in engaging with intense narratives. In Disney Plus' 2022 teen drama, Revenge of Others, Lomon's portrayal of Soo Heon nearly transformed the dynamics of the storyline as he grappled with significant moral dilemmas.
Initially depicted as the vigilante-next-door, he delivered a dose of justice to numerous bullies. However, the adrenaline of his actions nearly pushed him to the brink, revealing potential traits of an unrestrained antagonist.
Despite this, Lomon has consistently excelled in embodying characters that align with the hero archetype, even when their actions occasionally venture into morally ambiguous territory. When inquired about the possibility of portraying a fully-fledged villain in the future, he expressed, “I've always wanted to take on any villainous role.”
He further stated, “If given the opportunity, I am confident that I can handle any kind of villain, no matter how bad they are. If the chance comes, I definitely want to try it at least once.”
What makes the K-drama star finally say yes to a script?
Lomon stated that although numerous factors influenced his choices, the foremost item on his agenda was ‘fun.’
“When something is enjoyable, or appears to be enjoyable, I generally have a more positive inclination towards it,” remarked the popular actor.
Fortunately, Indian viewers can now enjoy the Family Matters K-drama on Channel K. The leading actor concluded his message with a clearly articulated and touching note for Hindi-speaking fans: “आपके प्यार और सपोर्ट के लिए दिल से शुक्रिया (translation: Heartfelt thanks for your love and support).”
We are still awaiting official confirmation regarding the possibility of a second season of Family Matters.
