Jyotika Talks About Industry Bias: ‘Marriage to Suriya Adds to the Pressure’
1 month ago | 5 Views
Jyotika is prepared to captivate viewers with her forthcoming series, Dabba Cartel. The actress, who is presently engaged in promoting the series, discussed in an interview with News18 the ongoing discrimination she encounters in the film industry due to her status as the spouse of a prominent star.
Jyotika on facing sexism in film industry
Jyotika, the wife of renowned actor Suriya, discussed her experiences with casual sexism in the film industry, despite her extensive career spanning over a decade. She remarked, "It appears to be a routine occurrence. Being married to a superstar means I encounter it from time to time, even now. I observe it during interviews as well. When I express that I feel fortunate to be married to Suriya, people often respond by saying he is a genuinely nice person. However, if he states that he feels lucky to have married a wonderful woman, it is perceived as, ‘Suriya is such a nice guy for acknowledging his wife.’ Casual sexism manifests even in material matters; for instance, if I purchase a car, it is anticipated that someone else will operate the controls and explore its features."
She elaborated on her perspective, noting that she could recount numerous such experiences. She stated, "This has become an integral part of everyday life. At times, it escalates to a point where one may experience an identity crisis. A woman's quest for her identity often compels her to make numerous decisions and choices independently. This is also how I determined my career trajectory."
Jyotika-Suriya's relationship
Jyotika and Suriya first encountered each other on the filming location of the 1999 Tamil movie Poovellam Kettuppar. After dating for several years, they entered into matrimony in 2006. The couple became parents with the birth of their daughter, Diya, in 2007, followed by the arrival of their son, Dev, in 2010.
Jyotika’s upcoming project
Jyotika is set to appear alongside Shabana Azmi, Gajraj Rao, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Lillete Dubey, and Bhupendra Singh Jadawat in the crime drama titled Dabba Cartel. The series, directed by Hitesh Bhatia and penned by Vishnu Menon and Bhavna Kher, is scheduled to debut on Netflix on February 28.
