Jyotika Expresses Discontent Over 'Kanguva' Reviews, Calls Out Bias Towards 'Pathetic' South Films

Suriya's most recent film, Kanguva, received unfavourable reactions from both critics and viewers. In response to the negative feedback, the actor's wife, Jyotika, expressed her support for the film by writing an extensive note addressing the critiques. While promoting her show, Dabba Cartel, Jyotika discussed her efforts to defend Suriya and his work against the severe criticism during an interview with entertainment journalist Puja Talwar.

Jyotika says she has a problem with bad films getting good reviews

In the course of the interview, the interviewer brought to Jyotika's attention her previous defence of Suriya and Kanguva in light of unfavourable critiques, and inquired about her perspective on cancel culture, particularly regarding assertions that "this star’s career is over." Jyotika replied, "My concern lies with poorly made films. I have observed a significant number of commercially unsuccessful films in the South that have performed well and received generous reviews. Therefore, when it came to my husband’s film, I believed it was subjected to an overly critical assessment. While there may have been aspects that were lacking, the overall effort was commendable. It was truly unique. However, witnessing harsher critiques for this film compared to some truly subpar ones was disheartening. I found myself more frustrated with the media for their lack of awareness."

When Jyotika defended Suriya's Kanguva

Following the film's unfavourable reviews, Jyotika took to Instagram to express her defence of it. She commended the film and highlighted its merits, stating, "I am taken aback by the negative critiques from the media and certain groups, especially since I have observed them being lenient towards numerous uninspired big-budget films featuring outdated narratives, where women are subjected to stalking, double entendre dialogues are prevalent, and exaggerated action sequences take precedence. What about the strengths of Kanguva? The women's action sequence in the latter half and the young boy's experiences of love and betrayal towards Kanguva? It seems they overlooked the positive aspects of their assessments. This leads me to question whether one should ever read, listen to, or place trust in such reviews."

She also remarked, "It is unfortunate that a significant amount of negativity was directed towards Kanguva on its opening day, even before the conclusion of the first show, which appeared to resemble coordinated group agendas. In reality, the film merits commendation for its innovative concept and the dedication demonstrated by the team in producing a 3D visual experience. Team Kanguva should take pride in their work, as those who are offering negative comments are contributing little more than criticism, rather than supporting the film industry."
