Jyotika Criticizes Top Tamil Directors for Catering Only to Male Stars

Jyotika has addressed the challenges faced by female actors in the Tamil film industry, reflecting on her decision to pursue diverse roles following her transition to motherhood at the age of 28. During an interview with Fever FM, she was accompanied by her Dabba Cartel team, which includes Shabana Azmi, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, and Shibani Dandekar. The host engaged them in a discussion regarding the societal expectation that women must remain youthful, in contrast to the acceptance of aging male actors by their fans.

Jyotika reveals how ageing is an issue in Tamil film industry

In response to this, Jyotika remarked, "This is a significant issue in the South. I became a mother at the age of 28, and since then, I have taken on markedly different roles. In fact, I believe I have not collaborated with a prominent star or hero since turning 28. This presents a considerable challenge, as I have been developing my career independently with new directors. The age factor plays a crucial role in this situation. Additionally, there is another major aspect that is missing in the Tamil industry, although I would not generalize this to all South Indian languages."

Jyotika says ‘biggies make films for biggies’

The current landscape lacks prominent filmmakers or experienced directors akin to K Balachander, who once created films centered on women or narratives that highlight their significant roles. Instead, we predominantly see major filmmakers focusing on projects for other high-profile individuals. Recently, it appears that no major director has produced a film specifically for a female lead. This absence is a notable deficiency in our industry. We face financial constraints, which pose a significant challenge, alongside the need for seasoned filmmakers to tell stories from a female perspective. The journey of women in the South is particularly arduous, as they often confront these challenges in solitude.
