Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor's newly released film, Loveyapa, serves as the Hindi adaptation of the Tamil film Love Today. Directed by Advait Chandan, this romantic comedy has received a mix of responses from both audiences and critics. In a recent interview, the film's writer, Sneha Desai, discussed her approach to adapting the original story. Desai emphasized the artistry involved in adaptation, asserting that it should not be mistaken for mere copying.

Loveyapa writer on adapting Love Today

In her conversation with Mid-Day, Sneha Desai highlighted the innovative perspective she and Advait Chandan adopted while creating Loveyapa. She expressed her disappointment at the notion that adaptation equates to imitation, stating that it requires a nuanced understanding and skill.

"Love Today is a cult classic. Our initial question was, ‘What new elements can we bring to the narrative?’ The first significant change was the shift in setting, which alters the dynamics of relationships. The second was the incorporation of contemporary dating terminology, as this film is tailored for Gen Z. The original was likely crafted in 2020-21," she explained to the publication.

Sneha noted that she and Advait began their work on Loveyapa two years after the release of Love Today. Given the evolving nature of dating, she indicated that the writing for the film featuring Junaid and Khushi needed to reflect these changes.

"Advait and I delved into understanding modern concepts such as crushes, affairs, emotional infidelity, nanoships, and friends with benefits, as well as how relationships with ex-partners evolve post-breakup," she elaborated.

Regarding Loveyapa, the film, which features Junaid and Khushi in leading roles, premiered on February 7, 2025, marking their debut on the silver screen. Produced by AGS Entertainment and Phantom Studios, the film faced off against Himesh Reshammiya's Badass Ravi Kumar at the box office, resulting in a competitive landscape for both films.
