Junaid Khan a Better Choice Than Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor in Laal Singh Chaddha: Mansoor Khan

Aamir Khan is poised to return to the film industry with his upcoming project, Sitaare Zameen Par, following the disappointing performance of Laal Singh Chaddha. The actor had high hopes for this adaptation of Forrest Gump, believing it would be a highlight of his career; however, the film did not perform well at the Box Office. This year has brought significant changes for Aamir, as he has found a new romantic partner, Gauri Spratt, whom he publicly introduced on his birthday. Additionally, he is expected to make his film comeback by Christmas. In a discussion with The Indian Express' Screen, Aamir's cousin and director Mansoor Khan expressed his views on the film's failure, suggesting that it might have been avoided had Aamir's son Junaid been cast in the role. Mansoor also hinted at the possibility of his own return to directing alongside Aamir.

Here's everything he said...

Mansoor Khan believes Junaid Khan was a better choice for Laal Singh Chaddha over Aamir Khan

While acknowledging Aamir Khan's commitment to his roles—whether it be achieving six-pack abs for Ghajini, portraying a college student in 3 Idiots, or gaining weight for Dangal—Mansoor advises his cousin to prioritize the script over his affection for a character.

This sentiment also applied to Laal Singh Chaddha, which Mansoor feels Aamir misinterpreted. "I watched the first trial and told Aamir, 'What are you doing!'" he recounted from the screening of Laal Singh Chaddha. He believes that although the screenplay was a solid adaptation of Forrest Gump, the distinct mannerisms made each scene feel disjointed, leading Aamir to host a failure party for the film.

The director, who is also a cousin of Aamir Khan, indicated that Junaid Khan was more suitable for the role than Aamir. He recounted, "Aamir asked me why I didn’t come to watch Junaid’s screen test. I believed Junaid performed exceptionally well." He proposed that Junaid be included in the film, but, as anticipated, the producers were surprised by this suggestion. Their concern stemmed from the potential loss of two major stars—Aamir and Kareena. He expressed his frustration with the prevailing mindset, stating, "What is this fear that the film won’t perform well at the box office? What nonsense is this?" dismissing the notion that only A-list actors can guarantee commercial success.

Mansoor Khan on quitting films and the thought of making a directorial comeback for one film only

Mansoor, the director of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, admitted, "I regret to acknowledge that I have not watched 99.99% of all films ever produced. However, I possess a talent for storytelling, and I believe I excel in that area."

Mansoor Khan describes his decision to leave filmmaking as extremely easy and a 'relief.' He mentions that he and Aamir Khan are currently in discussions about adapting his second book, ONE: The Story of the Ultimate Myth, into a film, while the third book in his trilogy is yet to be released. Aamir has shown interest in taking on a role in this adaptation. Mansoor suggested that he might return to directing specifically for this project, after which he intends to focus on writing novels instead of pursuing a career in film. However, they are still in the process of finalizing details, as Mansoor believes that each story is best suited to a particular medium, and he wants to ensure that the narrative from his book is compelling enough for a film adaptation.

Mansoor Khan discusses what might be going wrong with filmmaking today

In reflecting on the pivotal scene of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Mansoor Khan shared that he crafted it while sitting on the rocks with the entire team. He perceived that the scene was unfolding too rapidly and concluded that the climax needed further development. As a result, he took the initiative to expand it. "You should have the liberty to make such adjustments. Relying exclusively on your first assistant director for shot breakdowns is inadequate. The inflexibility often arises from films being excessively structured. Somewhere along the line, that simplicity and innocence have been lost, even in high-quality films," he stated.

Before the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, make sure to catch Aamir Khan's final film appearance in a cameo role in Kajol's Salaam Venky.
