Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench, who celebrated her 90th birthday on December 9, 2024, recently provided an update regarding her deteriorating eyesight during a discussion with Trinny Woodall on the Fearless podcast. The actress disclosed that her vision impairment has made it impossible for her to attend events independently.

Judi says she can't attend events alone now

Judi spoke about her condition, noting that although she has never enjoyed attending events alone, her current eyesight issues render it impossible. “I am not adept at that at all. Not in the least. Nor would I be able to do so now. Thankfully, I am not required to do so at this moment,” she remarked. With a touch of humour regarding her situation, she added, “I have no vision. There will always be someone accompanying me. I must have assistance now because I cannot see, and I risk walking into something or tripping.”

Dench first disclosed her diagnosis of macular degeneration in 2012, addressing public concerns regarding her eyesight. During a 2021 event for the London-based Vision Foundation, she candidly discussed her experience with vision loss, stating, “You discover ways to navigate and tackle the challenges that arise. I have had to devise an alternative method for memorizing lines, which involves having dear friends repeat them to me repeatedly.”

Judi, who was last featured in the film Spirited alongside Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, recently suggested that she may be considering retirement due to her vision impairment, indicating that she has no forthcoming projects. She expressed to The Mirror, “No, no. I can’t even see!”
