Josh Brolin Critiques Oscars: Threatens to Leave Acting Over Villeneuve's Snub
2 months ago | 5 Views
Josh Brolin has expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the exclusion of Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve from the Best Director category at the 2025 Academy Awards. The film, which has garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success, received five nominations, primarily in technical categories, including a nomination for Best Picture. Brolin utilized his Instagram Stories to convey his disappointment and reiterated his earlier statement about considering retirement from acting if Villeneuve did not receive an acknowledgement.
What Josh said
Josh portrayed the role of Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Two. He utilized Instagram stories to share a video in which he extended his congratulations to the nominees recognized for their work on Dune: Part Two, expressing his bewilderment at Denis not receiving a nomination.
He stated: “I would like to congratulate the team behind ‘Dune’ for the best picture nomination, Greig Fraser for cinematography, the team for best visual effects, Patrice [Vermette] for production design, and the sound department. It seems I should consider quitting acting since Denis Villeneuve was not nominated. This is simply how the industry operates, and it perplexes me. Nevertheless, [Editor] Joe Walker and Denis, you both deserve this recognition. The film is outstanding, even surpassing the first instalment. Those who have received accolades truly merit them. I am proud to be part of this project. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
More details
Dennis was previously overlooked in the Best Director category for Dune: Part One, having received only one prior nomination in this category for the 2016 film Arrival.
This year, the nominees for Best Director include Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Jacques Audiard for Emilia Perez, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance.
In a November interview with Variety last year, Josh expressed, “If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting. It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”
Dune: Part Two adapts the latter portion of Frank Herbert’s novel, taking place on the fictional desert planet of Arrakis. Timothée Chalamet portrays Paul Atreides, the exiled Duke of House Atreides, while Zendaya plays Chani, a young Fremen warrior. Denis has also expressed interest in creating a third Dune film, which would be based on Dune Messiah, the second book in the series.
