Jonita Gandhi Reveals Playback Singers in Bollywood Don't Always Get Paid

On Monday night, singer Jonita Gandhi hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit. She tackled questions covering her career and playback singing in Bollywood. One of the biggest surprises was her revelation that there are instances when playback singers don’t receive payment for their contributions in the Hindi film industry.

Jonita Gandhi talks about the issue of singers not receiving fair pay

A curious Reddit user reached out to Jonita, wondering if it's true that singers in Bollywood films don’t get paid for their songs. The user expressed their confusion, saying, “The main way singers make money is through concerts... This just doesn’t add up to me.” They wanted to know if playback singers actually receive compensation for their efforts.

Jonita replied, clarifying that while singers do receive payment, there are instances when they don’t. She kept it brief, stating, “Singers do get paid for playback singing, but sadly, that’s not always the case. I wish it were different, but it isn’t.”

Female artists require more opportunities

A Reddit user raised a point about the lack of opportunities for female singers, asking, “Why aren’t there more songs written for female voices? Even when a song features a female character, it often has a male singer. What are your thoughts on this? Why do you think it’s happening, and have you talked to the producers about it?”

In response, she agreed with the sentiment and emphasized the importance of audience support for female artists, saying, “I definitely think we need more songs for women! But I also want to encourage everyone to support female artists and songs that highlight female voices. It’s really up to you all to help make those songs successful too.”

Latest efforts

Jonita made her Bollywood debut back in 2013 with the title song of Chennai Express. Recently, she lent her voice to the Hindi version of the Nadaaniyan title track and sang Yedi from the Tamil film Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam. In 2024, she also dropped some independent tracks, including Tu Jaane, Love Like That with Ali Sethi, It Is What It Is, and Always & Forever. Plus, she hinted at possibly stepping into acting soon, playfully responding with “MAYBE lol” during an AMA when a fan inquired about it.
