Actor John Abraham has expressed his admiration for Russia amidst the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. His comments were made during an interview while he was promoting his film, The Diplomat, which has been showing in theaters since its release on Friday.
In a conversation with Aaj Tak, Abraham discussed various facets of diplomacy, particularly India's position regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.
“I am a great admirer of Russia, and I state this publicly,” he remarked during the interview.
Regarding the war, the actor indicated his support for Moscow in the dispute, attributing the conflict to NATO's expansion.
“I support Russia because… naturally, I do not wish for war. I do not want the people of Ukraine to suffer, nor the people of Russia. However, Russia has been voicing its concerns for 30 years, urging NATO not to encroach. Unfortunately, their warnings went unheeded until it was too late,” Abraham elaborated.
He also commended India's approach to the situation, asserting that no one has the authority to dictate whether our nation can purchase Russian oil. Additionally, he expressed his admiration for External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, describing him as the embodiment of Indian diplomacy.
Russia-Ukraine peace talks
The leading diplomats from the United States and Russia are engaged in discussions regarding the "next steps" to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted for three years and led to numerous fatalities.
In spite of recent strains between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv has tentatively accepted a U.S.-mediated proposal for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, contingent upon Moscow ceasing its military operations in eastern Ukraine.
However, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has not consented to any ceasefire, instead imposing conditions that exceed those outlined in the U.S. agreement with Ukraine.
Since then, both parties have conducted significant aerial assaults, and Russia has intensified its efforts on the battlefield to dislodge Ukrainian forces from their established position in the western Russian region of Kursk.
In a separate context, John Abraham has strongly refuted the notion that minorities are unsafe in India. During an interview, he expressed that he has never felt more secure in the country.
When questioned about the ongoing discourse regarding the safety of minorities in India, he stated, “Perhaps because I am an actor, some may argue that my perspective is biased. However, I am a minority myself; my mother is Zoroastrian, and my father is a Syrian Christian. I have never felt safer in my homeland,” he remarked in an interview with Times Now.
Abraham is currently featured in the action-thriller film The Diplomat, which is inspired by a true story. Directed by Shivam Nair, known for Naam Shabana, the film also stars Sadia Khateeb in a leading role.
The narrative centers around the real-life experience of Indian national Uzma Ahmad, who was repatriated to India in 2017 after allegedly being deceived by a Pakistani man. She disclosed that she was coerced into marriage at gunpoint and subjected to abuse during her visit to his country.
