A new OTT platform has emerged in the Indian market, quickly establishing itself as one of the largest, if not the largest, in terms of subscriber count and user engagement. On Friday morning, JioStar, a newly formed joint venture resulting from the merger of Viacom18 and Star India, unveiled JioHotstar. This platform is the result of the integration of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, both of which are among India's premier platforms for sports, entertainment, and more.

About JioHotstar  

This development signifies the merging of their content libraries and the consolidation of their subscriber bases. As stated in a press release from JioStar, the new platform offers "nearly 300,000 hours of entertainment and boasts over 500 million users."

During the launch of JioHotstar, Kiran Mani, CEO of Digital at JioStar, remarked, “The essence of JioHotstar lies in a robust vision—to make premium entertainment genuinely accessible to every Indian. Our commitment to Infinite Possibilities ensures that entertainment transcends privilege, becoming a collective experience for all. By incorporating AI-driven recommendations and providing streaming in more than 19 languages, we are personalizing content like never before.”

Transition to New JioHotstar Plans  

JioHotstar is set to replace the previous subscription plans with new offerings. Recently, the old JioCinema premium subscriptions (priced at ₹29 per month) for all users were temporarily suspended, leading to speculation about the introduction of different plans and pricing tiers. While JioStar has yet to disclose comprehensive details regarding these plans, the press release indicates "attractive subscription options designed to meet the diverse needs of audiences, starting at Rs. 149 per quarter." Current subscribers of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar will be able to transition smoothly to their JioHotstar subscriptions, as further noted in the press release.
