Jennifer Lopez was clearly touched when her new project, Kiss of the Spider Woman, got a standing ovation at its premiere on Sunday, January 26, during the Sundance Film Festival. The 55-year-old star of Hustlers lights up the screen alongside Diego Luna and Tonatiuh in Bill Condon’s much-anticipated movie musical, which draws inspiration from the celebrated 1993 Broadway production by the iconic duo John Kander and Fred Ebb, famous for their hits Cabaret and Chicago.

After facing some teasing for funding her own musical film last year, the On The Floor singer revealed that taking on a role in Kiss of the Spider Woman has been a dream come true for her, especially in front of the audience at Park City’s Eccles Theatre. As reported by Variety, Lopez expressed, “I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life. The reason I even wanted to be in this business is because my mom would sit me in front of the TV and [West Side Story] would come on once a year.”

She added, “I was captivated and thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ This is the first time I’ve actually gotten to do it. This man [Condon] made my dream a reality.”

Lopez's latest movie is all the buzz

Kiss of the Spider Woman takes place in an Argentinian prison during the harsh 'Dirty War' period. The story revolves around Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), a queer window dresser who’s doing time for having a romantic relationship with another man. To cope with the tough prison environment, Luis entertains his cellmate, Valentine Arregui (Diego Luna), by recounting tales about his favorite movie star, Ingrid Luna, played by Lopez.

Directed by Bill Condon, this film is the second adaptation of Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel, following Héctor Babenco’s 1985 version that won William Hurt an Oscar for his role as Luis.

According to Sundance, the film is described as a “textually rich historical and political drama with the flashy technicolour extravagance of an old Hollywood musical.” They also noted, “Lopez is an astonishing scene-stealer in a career-highlight performance as Luna/Aurora, with showstopping musical numbers that showcase her incredible dancing and singing talents,” as reported by The Independent.
