In 2023, Jennifer Aniston expressed a traditional viewpoint regarding intimate scenes in film.

The star of FRIENDS opted not to utilize an intimacy coordinator while filming passionate scenes alongside Jon Hamm for the Apple TV+ series ‘The Morning Show.’ “They inquired if we wanted an intimacy coordinator. I come from a different era, so I was curious, ‘What does that entail?’” she remarked to Variety. Aniston portrayed the character Alex Levy, a news anchor, while Hamm took on the role of business mogul Paul Marks.

“They explained, ‘It’s where someone checks in to see if you’re comfortable,’ and I thought, ‘This is already awkward enough!’ We are experienced — we can manage this ourselves,” Aniston continued.

Additionally, she noted, “Jon was always a true gentleman, consistently asking, ‘You OK?’ with every move and cut.” She emphasized that the scenes were also meticulously choreographed, highlighting the contributions of director Mimi Leder and the talented editor, as well as the music and lighting, stating, “So, you don’t really prepare.”

Director Mimi Leder echoed this sentiment, recalling, “It was a closed set with two mature actors who fully grasped the storytelling aspect and were deeply engaged in it. Our aim was to ensure it was sensitive.”

“We aspired for it to be sexy, adult, and emotional. They truly embraced the moment.”

Aniston’s remarks did not sit well with intimacy coordinators

Samantha J. McDonald, a certified coach in Intimacy Directors & Coordinators, expressed her hope that her professional journey will eventually intersect with that of a particular actress, who might be receptive to learning more about the role of an Intimacy Coordinator and the advantages of collaborating with one, whether as an actor, director, crew member, writer, or producer. She conveyed this sentiment in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2023.

McDonald further emphasized the potential for this actress to assist in educating her peers who may require additional support. "We are still very much in an educational phase, and nearly every week, I find myself explaining our role and how we contribute to the cast, crew, and overall production," she remarked.

Heather María Ács, another intimacy coordinator, noted that many experienced actors in Hollywood remain unaware of the "workflow and practices" associated with intimacy coordination.

She added, "It appears that the actress, irrespective of her level of experience, lacks familiarity with the role, practices, or workflow of an Intimacy Coordinator, which is not uncommon. Many individuals both within and outside the industry are still learning about the contributions of intimacy coordinators."
