Grieving Plaza has not yet publicly addressed the tragic loss of her husband, who died by suicide. Nevertheless, her representatives issued a statement to Deadline, indicating that “the family is devastated and requests privacy during this challenging time,” on Saturday.
The couple married in 2021 in a private ceremony and did not have any children together. The White Lotus actress announced her marriage to the indie director through an Instagram post that same year, where she praised his work on Spin Me Round and affectionately referred to him as her “darling husband.”
Baena was recognized for his contributions to films such as Joshy, and Horse Girl, and for co-writing I Heart Huckabees, as reported by Page Six.
Plaza and Baena's private wedding ceremony
Plaza disclosed during her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she married during the COVID-19 pandemic after feeling “a little bored one night” while in quarantine. In a spontaneous moment, she suggested to Baena, “Hey, it’s our 10-year anniversary, we should do something. Get an ice cream cone or do something special,” and humorously mentioned the idea of marriage on their wedding day.
She explained that the couple secretly wed through 1hourmarriage.com, a platform designed to assist couples in quickly obtaining marriage licenses and facilitating expedited ceremonies. Plaza noted, "We didn’t tell anybody we were doing it.”
The couple, who began their relationship in 2011 after working together on several projects, including Life After Beth (2014) and The Little Hours (2017), shared a significant history prior to making this important commitment.
