On February 11, veteran actress and Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan addressed the film industry during the General Discussion on the Union Budget 2025-26 in the Rajya Sabha. She implored Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to show “mercy” towards the film sector and consider measures to ensure its survival. Jaya Bachchan, who recently appeared in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, criticized the government for allegedly neglecting the film industry.
Jaya Bachchan urges government to help film industry
As reported by PTI, Jaya Bachchan highlighted her concerns, stating that the government appears intent on 'destroying' the film industry. She further asserted that the industry is exploited for governmental agendas. She remarked, "One industry has been completely overlooked by you, and previous administrations have also failed in this regard. However, your current approach has escalated this neglect. The film and entertainment sector has been disregarded entirely, as you only utilize it for your own interests. Currently, aside from GST issues, single-screen theaters are closing down. Audiences are avoiding cinemas due to rising costs. It seems you wish to obliterate this industry, which uniquely connects the entire world to India."
'Please have some mercy'
Moreover, the esteemed actress made a heartfelt appeal for compassion towards the audio-visual sector. Advocating for the film industry, she stated, "Please spare them. Please show some compassion. You are attempting to extinguish this industry. Do not proceed with this course of action. Today, you have begun to target cinema as well." She urged Sitharaman to take the matter “very, very seriously,” emphasizing the challenges faced by the industry. She concluded, “I urge the Finance Minister to consider and implement measures to assist this industry in its survival."
In the meantime, Jaya Bachchan's film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani featured notable actors such as Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Shabana Azmi, and Dharmendra. Released in 2023 and directed by Karan Johar, the film is currently available for viewing on Prime Video.
