At a recent conclave, Bachchan shared her critical perspective on contemporary films, offering a rather lukewarm assessment of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), featuring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar.
Jaya Bachchan criticizes Toilet: Ek Prem Katha
During her address at the India TV conference, Jaya Bachchan expressed her hesitation to watch the film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. She remarked on the title, indicating that she would not consider viewing a movie with such a name. Bachchan further questioned, "Is that truly a title?"
A portion of the audience responded to her inquiry regarding their comfort level with viewing a film bearing that title by raising their hands. Regarding the actor's perspective, Bachchan expressed her dismay, noting that it is unfortunate that only a handful of individuals, approximately four, are interested in watching the film. She remarked, "This is bound to fail."
The host pointed out Bollywood films that resonate with government initiatives. Bachchan referred to these as "propaganda" films and affirmed her complete support for them.
The actor remarked that engaging in discussions on such subjects necessitates considerable time, further noting that even political organizations are now venturing into film production.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha's social message and box office success
In 2017, the film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha highlighted the issue of insufficient restroom facilities in the rural regions of the country. The cast included Divyenndu and Anupam Kher. With global earnings approaching Rs 300 crore, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha achieved remarkable success at the box office.
The film can be streamed on both Netflix and ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium).
Directed by Rajendra Gupta, Sadabahar (2024) marks Jaya Bachchan's latest cinematic endeavor, while Akshay Kumar's most recent release, Sky Force, premiered in January.
