Javed Akhtar Celebrates 50 Years of Deewar: A Nostalgic Look Back at the 'Angry Young Man' Era
1 month ago | 5 Views
Cinema is currently seeing a surge of heroes who are saviors but are all about being tough and ruthless. Even though these characters come in different forms, they all trace back to a single cinematic trend that kicked off in the 1970s: the Angry Young Man. Each character has its own ideology, but they all draw heavy inspiration from this trend created by the legendary duo Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. It all began in 1973 with Zanjeer, which paved the way for Deewar in 1975. This second film solidified Amitabh Bachchan's status as the Angry Young Man and established Salim-Javed as the masterminds behind this much-needed shift in Hindi cinema. Today marks the 50th anniversary of Deewar, and Javed Akhtar has shared a heartfelt response to celebrate it.
Javed Akhtar Shares His Thoughts on 50 Years of Deewar
Deewar, directed by Yash Chopra and penned by Salim-Javed, features a stellar cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Nirupa Roy, and Neetu Kapoor. Like their other works, the writers tackled societal issues but did so in an entertaining way. This approach resonated with audiences who were eager for a hero they could relate to—someone just like them, but with a bit of flair. Recently, Javed Akhtar reflected on how quickly time flies in a tweet, noting, “Deewaar was released on 21st January 1975. Exactly fifty years ago. Time passes so quietly and swiftly. It’s a constant mystery!” His tweet has sparked a wave of reactions from fans of all ages. Deewar made a significant impact on Hindi cinema and remains a classic that people remember fondly..
Salim-Javed picked Amitabh Bachchan instead of Rajesh Khanna for Deewar
Did you know that Rajesh Khanna was originally the top pick for Deewar instead of Amitabh Bachchan? Salim-Javed had helped revive Bachchan’s career after he faced a string of flops before Zanjeer. However, they were convinced that only Amitabh could truly embody their character Vijay, and they weren’t interested in casting anyone else. In a past interview with Lehren Podcast, Salim Khan shared how they made the choice to go with Amitabh over Rajesh. He mentioned, “There’s a difference between ideal casting and settling for something less. We firmly believed that Amitabh Bachchan was the perfect fit for Deewaar.”
He mentioned that while Deewaar’s producer Gulshan Rai had initially signed Rajesh Khanna, they were convinced that Amitabh Bachchan was the perfect fit for the role. They made it clear that if they wanted to go ahead with the film, Amitabh had to be on board. Sure, the movie might have done okay with another actor, but it wouldn’t have been the best choice. It would have felt like settling for less.
