Jason Isaacs Clarifies ‘Double Standard’ Comment on Male Nudity After Backlash

8 days ago | 5 Views

Jason Isaacs, known for his role in The White Lotus, recently became embroiled in controversy following his remarks regarding a nude scene in Season 3 and the question of whether he utilized prosthetics. His comments drew significant backlash online, with many perceiving his remarks as 'tone-deaf.' In light of the criticism, Isaacs addressed the matter in an interview with Variety, where he clarified his statements and expressed regret for mentioning actresses Mikey Madison and Margaret Qualley.

Jason Isaacs backtracks on his comments

Isaacs acknowledged that he had “used the wrong words in the wrong way” and specifically regretted referencing the names of Madison and Qualley. He stated, “I used the term ‘double standard,’ which was not my intention. There is indeed a different double standard — women have faced severe exploitation, while men have not. My words were poorly chosen, and I was fatigued after numerous interviews. I absolutely should not have brought up those two actresses, whom I hold in high regard. I am a huge admirer of Mikey Madison. My intention was not to suggest that men have had a more difficult experience than women — that would be ridiculous. Women have endured significant challenges in the film industry for a long time, and I sincerely hope that this is changing. Women have been exploited in cinema for ages, often being gratuitously exposed and subjected to inappropriate inquiries,” he remarked.

Jason Isaacs calls questions about his nude scene "weird and obsessive"

Despite the backlash, Isaacs maintained his stance that journalists' questions regarding the authenticity of his character’s anatomy were “embarrassing and inappropriate.” He explained, “I was asked repeatedly in one day by various journalists, ‘Are you wearing a prosthetic?’ This implies, ‘Have I seen your actual penis? It’s crucial for me to know if I’ve seen your penis.’ It seems a bit odd and somewhat obsessive to me. I thought I could handle it with humor, but I did not respond well.”

What Jason Isaacs said

In an effort to evade inquiries regarding his nude scenes and the use of prosthetics in The White Lotus Season 3, Jason Isaacs remarked during an interview with Fox 5, “Let me pose this question: if you had a woman present, would you be particularly eager to discuss her intimate anatomy? Would you ever engage an actress in such a conversation? I doubt it. This reflects a significant double standard.”

When the reporter maintained that she would indeed address such topics, Jason cited examples of Mikey Madison, who portrayed a sex worker in Anora, and Margaret Qualley, who appeared in The Substance, noting that they were not subjected to similar questions about their bodies in interviews. He emphasized that inquiries of this nature are seldom, if ever, directed towards them.
