Prior to the release of Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, featuring Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, and Fahadh Faasil on December 5, discussions emerged regarding the film's exclusive occupancy of all IMAX screens in India, which led to the delay of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar re-release. Janhvi Kapoor came to the film's defence, addressing fans who expressed dissatisfaction over the postponement of the Hollywood feature.
‘Pushpa 2 is also cinema’
Tatva India published an article titled ‘India doesn’t deserve cinema’ in response to the news that Interstellar would not be released in India due to Pushpa 2's IMAX dominance. In a comment on their Instagram post, Janhvi defended Indian cinema and questioned the tendency to undervalue local productions while idolizing Western films.
She remarked, “Pushpa 2 is also cinema. Why do we have such a fixation on glorifying the West while disparaging our own creations and hastily deeming them unworthy?” Janhvi Kapoor further noted that while the global community celebrates our culturally rich narratives, we often dismiss them, stating, “The same rooted representation and grand storytelling that other nations admire and are captivated by in our cinema is something we ourselves seem to shy away from. It is disheartening.”
Some individuals appeared to concur with her perspective, while others expressed dissent. One individual remarked, “Indeed, this is the current trend; those who consume Western media often behave as if they belong to the upper class, in contrast to those who prefer Bollywood or other Indian films.” Conversely, another individual contended, “If the visuals of Pushpa 2 are indicative of its quality, then this is a form of cinema we should find shameful! Please refrain from viewing it through an East versus West lens; I am confident you possess greater insight than that.”
