Jane Fonda once had a wild encounter when she had to protect her grandson from a bear that wandered into her home. On Tuesday, the star of Grace and Frankie joined her son, Troy O'Donovan Garity, on Netflix's Skip Intro podcast. When asked to share a little-known story about his mom, the 51-year-old actor revealed that she once “pushed a bear out of her bedroom.”

Garity reminisced about that night, saying, “She was living in New Mexico, kind of in the wilderness. She was looking after her grandson, who was in a crib in the bedroom.” He was talking about his now 25-year-old nephew, Malcolm Vadim.

“She heard a noise and decided to check it out in the middle of the night. When she returned, the screen door was broken, and there was a bear in the bedroom, sniffing around the crib,” Garity explained.

Host Krista Smith was taken aback and asked Fonda, “What did you do?” Garity encouraged his 87-year-old mom to share her story, and she playfully demonstrated by roaring and raising her arms to look bigger. The three of them laughed, with Fonda even apologizing to the sound guy in the studio.

“I had just learned what to do if you encounter a bear, and that was it,” Fonda said, recalling her strategy to scare it off. “I made myself look big; I opened my bathrobe,” she added, noting that while she managed to divert the bear from the crib, it didn’t actually leave the house.

Fonda shared that the bear “urinated on the rug and then just sat by the door.” But she did manage to push it out. “I did, I pushed it out, yeah,” Fonda remembered.
