James Van Der Beek is sharing his personal journey with colorectal cancer as he looks back on life and the lessons he's picked up along the way. To celebrate his 48th birthday, the Dawson's Creek actor posted an Instagram video called "What cancer taught me," giving a heartfelt glimpse into his experiences.

Van Der Week opens up about his experience fighting cancer

In a video posted on Saturday, March 8, the actor opened up, saying, "This has been the toughest year of my life." He reflected on how he used to see himself primarily as an actor, but admitted that it never truly brought him fulfillment. As he’s grown older, he’s come to view himself as "the ultimate" role—being a loving, strong, supportive husband, father, provider, and "steward of the land."

While these roles gave him some satisfaction for a while, this year forced him to confront his own mortality. Discussing his diagnosis, Van Der Beek shared, "I had to face death head-on. All those identities I valued so much were taken away from me." He mentioned that he struggled to support his family like he used to because he was "away for treatment."

He elaborated, "I couldn't be the helpful husband my wife needed. I couldn't be the father who could lift his kids and tuck them in at night. I wasn't able to provide since I wasn't working. I couldn't even take care of the land because there were times I was too weak to prune the trees when it needed to be done," as reported by People magazine.

Cancer pushed Van Der Beek to embark on a journey of self-discovery

Van Der Beek talked about grappling with his identity while battling cancer. Through his journey of self-exploration and meditation, he came to the conclusion, "I deserve God's love just for being me. If I’m worthy of that love, then why shouldn’t I also value myself?" He expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he’s received since his diagnosis, adding, “And that goes for you too. 'You are worthy of love.' Because you truly are.”

He first revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2024, according to People magazine.
