Jackky Bhagnani on AI: A New Era for Storytelling Begins

Recently, the release of the trailer for India's inaugural AI-driven film featuring virtual stars has reignited discussions regarding the potential for AI to supplant human creativity. While AI has been extensively utilized in the film industry for tasks such as de-ageing actors and depicting their younger selves, this marks the first instance of virtual protagonists being tested in a mainstream cinematic context.

"We will need to observe the outcomes of such initiatives. Currently, AI-powered tools assist in various filmmaking tasks, including scheduling shoots, managing pre-production logistics, organizing data, and overseeing post-production and visual effects. AI plays a significant role in supporting filmmakers throughout the entire process. Additionally, there are tools available that can analyze data from successful films, propose plot twists, and even aid in overcoming writer's block. However, I am concerned that an over-reliance on AI tools may ultimately hinder authentic human creativity," states actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani.

He emphasizes that scriptwriters and writer-directors should prioritize crafting authentic, organic narratives that possess depth and emotional resonance. "Machines do not experience emotions, which gives humans a distinct advantage. Can any machine truly capture the poignant moments depicted in 'Laapataa Ladies,' which beautifully encapsulates the essence of rural India and its authentic, grounded characters? Machines are incapable of achieving that. Therefore, I firmly believe that filmmakers should persist in exploring innovative and fresh themes or identifying stories that resonate with audiences," Jackky asserts.

He further extends this reasoning to the realm of music. "It is well-known that numerous AI tools can generate music akin to that of a professional. While it is acceptable for a human to propose a melody and have the machine produce the sound, what occurs if someone becomes entirely dependent on AI for music creation? Can one envision a machine composing a soulful melody comparable to those crafted by Naushad, RD Burman, and AR Rahman? AI tools are most effective as assistants, not as the architects of your creativity," Jackky concludes.

Talking about his own company Jjust 360, he says, it would be interesting to see how AI tools can augment the work they do by enhancing human creativity. “My personal take is that AI tools, only when used judiciously, can serve as valuable assets to save time and cost,” concludes Jackky.
