Jaaved Jaaferi's latest film, Inn Galiyon Mein, is currently being screened in theaters nationwide. This independent production, which does not feature major stars, has performed reasonably well, though it has not achieved blockbuster status at the box office. In an interview with HT, the actor discusses the film and shares his insights on the current landscape of independent cinema in India.
Jaaved Jaaferi on independent films in India
Discussing the commercial ambitions of independent films, Jaaved expresses, "I want to convey a message to the audience. Some people often say, 'We'll watch this one at home.' However, it is essential to support such films to ensure that independent cinema thrives and its essence remains vibrant."
The actor notes that while mainstream cinema tends to shy away from stories with a message, filmmakers like Rajkumar Hirani have successfully integrated meaningful themes into their blockbuster hits. "He recognizes that to create a socially relevant film, he needs a prominent star to attract audiences to theaters," the actor remarks. He further emphasizes his optimism, pointing out that the new generation of actors and filmmakers is focusing on authentic narratives. "I find hope in smaller films featuring actors like Rajkummar Rao or Ayushmann Khurrana. Although they may not be massive blockbusters, they are profitable and make a significant impact," Jaaved concludes.
On representation of lower income group in mainstream Bollywood
Inn Galiyon Mein takes place in Lucknow and features Vivaan Shah and Avantika Dassani as two vegetable vendors who are in love. Jaaved Jaaferi points out that the lower class of Indian society is increasingly underrepresented in mainstream Bollywood. He states, "Films rarely focus on this segment of society, despite it being the true essence of India. Bollywood tends to create aspirational narratives centered around summer clubs and prestigious universities." He further emphasizes, "While this approach is not inherently negative, it is essential that stories encompass everyone. Narratives should not be confined to just the affluent or influential."
Directed by Avinash Das, Inn Galiyon Mein includes performances by Jaaved Jaaferi, Vivaan Shah, and Avantika Dassani. The film premiered in theaters on March 14.
