Singer Jasleen Royal encountered significant backlash following her opening performance at Coldplay's recent concert in Mumbai, with many fans expressing dissatisfaction regarding her perceived lack of vocal precision. In response, singer Sona Mahapatra has publicly criticized Jasleen, implying that she appeared inadequately prepared for the event.
Sona's Critique of Jasleen
In a recent interview, Sona declined to refer to Jasleen as an artist or performer.
Sona remarked, “When the controversy surrounding Jasleen erupted, and people claimed ‘she can’t sing’, it was widely discussed. It was disheartening. The performance was subpar. Given the magnitude of the stage and the opportunity, it felt as though she was informed at the last moment, despite the presence of backing singers and a full band.”
She attributed the situation to a lack of foresight among corporations and labels that assess an artist's value based solely on their number of views and followers. She stated, “This reflects a deficiency in foresight and a disregard for merit within corporate and label structures. Just because one is a talented songwriter does not guarantee they are also a competent performer. The mere fact of having collaborated with Dulquer (Salman) and garnered views does not equate to performance quality. There are far more deserving performers. If there were a genuine merit-based system, that artist…”
At this juncture, Sona hesitated and retracted her use of the term artist. When the interviewer referred to Jasleen as a "performer," Sona quickly disagreed, dismissing the label entirely. She asserted that “such an individual should not be on stage. The truly disheartening aspect is that the world witnessed it.”
Describing the incident as a tragic moment, Sona emphasized that she was not revelling in anyone's misfortune. She questioned “what criteria were used to select her for this opportunity.”
About Jasleen’s performance
Recently, Chris Martin's band Coldplay held concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. Jasleen Royal, recognized for her popular songs such as Ranjha and Din Shagna Da, served as the opening act for the three-night event. However, her performance elicited mixed reviews on social media.
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri criticized her performance, stating on social media, “The audience possesses more musicality than these auto-tuned, Instagram-generated artists. Consider if she lacked followers on Instagram; would she have even been permitted to audition for a local singing competition? The emphasis on follower count over genuine talent has become the prevailing trend.”
