Netflix’s highly awaited romantic satire The Royals had its trailer debut this Tuesday in a truly magnificent style—an occasion characterized by glamour, splendor, and sincere discussions. The series is set to offer a dazzling mix of contemporary romance and sharp social critique, and one of its actors, Ishaan Khatter, took a moment to contemplate what makes the show distinct.
Speaking at the trailer reveal, Ishaan characterized the distinctive tone of The Royals, describing it as both enjoyable and emotionally profound. “The writers had precise references and sources of inspiration. Since this serves as a modern satire on current royalty, Young Royals was undoubtedly a point of reference. However, what truly motivated me was the internal landscape of my character. On the surface, it’s a very binge-worthy, quick-view, enjoyable show—with all the flash, fun, and sparkle. Yet as you delve deeper, you begin to notice the flaws. There’s genuine substance. And as an actor, that contrast was extraordinarily thrilling. ”
Ishaan also commended the strong creative team behind the production—many of whom are women—and how that influenced his portrayal. “I was surrounded by an exceedingly motivating team. I was supported by an array of marvelous, marvelous women—something that’s becoming a consistent theme in my career. More than 50% of the directors, cinematographers, and creative partners I’ve collaborated with in prominent roles have been women. I’ve genuinely been shaped by female creators, and I believe that made my job simpler. I had that perspective to rely on. ”
When inquired about his chemistry with co-star Bhumi Pednekar, Ishaan replied with a grin: “It’s romance! I simply said, ‘Tell me what to do and I’ll perform. ’” He further mentioned that their on-screen relationship developed naturally from the time spent establishing rapport off-camera. “We had ample time together—we engaged in many readings, exercises, and just spent time together. We discovered our chemistry as Ishaan and Bhumi, and that flowed into the show. It’s a timeless romance with exaggerated situations. We all enjoyed exploring our characters. ”
Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, The Royals is written by Neha Veena Sharma and produced by Pritish Nandy Communications. The Netflix series is developed by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy. Featuring a remarkable ensemble cast—including Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra, and Luke Kenny—The Royals is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on May 9.
