Actor Ishaan Khatter has portrayed a diverse range of characters throughout his career; however, taking on the role of royalty is a novel experience for him. In the forthcoming Netflix series, The Royals, he assumes the character of a prince. In a conversation with HT, Ishaan discusses his role and shares insights on how streaming platforms differ from traditional films.

The character Aviraj may be vastly different from Ishaan, yet the actor identifies certain similarities between them. "Both of us are emotionally intense individuals. Aviraj tends to suppress his feelings, while I strive to improve in that regard as I mature emotionally. I certainly cannot relate to his overwhelming desire to escape; I do not feel the need to run away," Ishaan explains.

However, he acknowledges that preparing for the role presented its own challenges. "Learning to play polo and convincingly portraying a professional player within just two and a half months was an incredibly daunting task. It felt intimidating at first. Now that we have completed the training, I am pleased to say that I reached a level of proficiency that I could achieve. It turned out to be a lot of fun."

How OTT differs from films

Ishaan has prior experience in streaming series, having appeared in A Suitable Boy. He acknowledges that the extended duration of longform content provides actors with greater opportunities, yet he still finds the constraints of films to be more demanding. "With series, there is more time available, which allows for a more detailed exploration of a character's development. It starts with the writing, but the format facilitates a more profound examination of all characters, particularly in an ensemble like Royals. The real challenge lies in the limited runtime of films. In that scenario, it becomes essential to convey complex ideas effectively and deeply within a brief timeframe. Achieving this requires a higher level of artistry and skill," he explains.

The Royals features Bhumi Pednekar alongside Ishaan and includes a diverse ensemble cast, such as Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Pandey, Vihaan Samat, and Sumukhi Suresh, among others. The series is set to premiere on Netflix on May 9.
