Is Nubbin Tech Real? The Viral ‘Black Mirror’ Chip Stirring Up Controversy

16 days ago | 5 Views

The internet is abuzz with excitement over a new and enigmatic technology known as ‘Nubbin’ — an implantable brain chip that purports to allow users to revisit memories, experience dreams, and completely escape reality. This concept may seem reminiscent of a storyline from Black Mirror, and indeed, it draws inspiration from the series.

The promotional campaign for Season 7 of Netflix's Black Mirror led many fans to believe that ‘Nubbin’ was a real product. Allegedly created by a company named TCKR Systems, the chip promised to transport users into a state of “virtual consciousness,” essentially a tailored dream environment facilitated by memory retrieval. Their website boldly states, “The perfect reality? It’s all in your head. Reality is mundane. Time for something better.”

Who so many believe that Nubbin Tech is real

The widespread belief in the authenticity of Nubbin Tech was fueled by a deeper illusion. On April 3, 2025, various media outlets received an internal email purportedly addressed to Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker regarding the Nubbin technology, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The email stated: “Hey Charlie,

We are nearly ready for the launch of THE NUBBIN™ – whoop!!

I am sending you the final assets for one last review, and once you approve, I will distribute them to the press list I’ve compiled. Let me know what you think xxxxx”

However, a subsequent email quickly retracted the previous message: “Please disregard this earlier email.”

This email, combined with a polished website, a promotional video on TikTok, and even a legitimate LinkedIn profile for TCKR Systems, led many to believe that Nubbin was indeed in the works.

The promotional clip for Season 7 of Black Mirror hinted at astonishing features such as the ability to explore forgotten memories, star in iconic films, revisit past romances, and journey through galaxies — all within the confines of one’s mind. The device was said to operate on a ‘Gen9 processor’ and claimed, “It’s better in here.”

Was it merely a clever ruse — an exceptionally well-executed one? TCKR Systems is a fictional technology firm that has been featured throughout the Black Mirror series, including in episodes such as San Junipero, Playtest, Black Museum, and Bandersnatch. This campaign served as an ingenious introduction to the new season, which is set to debut on April 10 with six new episodes.

The Nubbin will appear in forthcoming episodes titled Eulogy, Hotel Reverie, and a sequel to the popular USS Callister.

Therefore, no — you cannot yet implant a Nubbin in your brain.
