For music composer Devi Sri Prasad, the year 2024 has proven to be a remarkable period in his career. He concluded the year on a triumphant note, particularly as "Pushpa: The Rule" emerged as a blockbuster, with its songs continuing to trend on social media even two months post-release.

“It brings me immense joy, and the longevity of songs is remarkable due to their accessibility. Tracks released years ago are still enjoyed today, and this timeless quality of music is a unique attribute not shared by all art forms. One can listen to music almost anywhere and at any time, and in that regard, I consider myself fortunate to be a musician,” Devi Sri Prasad (DSP) shared in an interview with OTTplay.

Composer Devi Sri Prasad Interview: I wish there were more love songs and stories

When exploring the DSP hit playlists on music streaming platforms, one may notice a predominance of fast-paced tracks. In response to inquiries about whether the composer feels constrained by the expectation to produce upbeat songs, particularly when some of his more melodic works do not receive adequate acknowledgement, Devi Sri Prasad stated, “Not at all. Several of my melodious albums, such as Sachein, Bommarillu, and even Mazhai, have received the recognition they deserve. Additionally, the song Srivalli from Pushpa: The Rise has been well-received by many. The track Sooseki from Pushpa 2 is also a melody that has been celebrated as one of the finest classics in recent years.”

The musician articulates that his perception of speed in music differs from conventional views. He states, "A song is not necessarily fast simply because it features a quick beat or rhythm. Some of the most impactful soft songs are built upon strong rhythms, with Michael Jackson serving as a prime example. Furthermore, the tempo required is often dictated by the context, as noted by Kamal Haasan. For instance, in our work on 'Neela Vaanam' from 'Manmadhan Ambu,' we created a very slow song, while the same album included a faster track like 'Oyyale.' I hope to see an increase in love songs and narratives, as well as opportunities for emotionally resonant music," he concludes.

“Even now I do not consider myself as a music composer”

In the contemporary landscape dominated by Instagram and the trend of 'reel' content, Devi Sri Prasad emphasizes that he does not focus solely on crafting a hook for a mere 15 seconds while composing a song. “We are creating music for a film, tailored to the specific context of that scene. However, I have always been forward-thinking; from the outset of my music career, I recognized the importance of making a song engaging within the first 10 to 15 seconds. My initial compositions have consistently been catchy, and this approach remains my guiding principle as I look ahead,” DSP remarks, recalling his memorable tracks such as Kissik, Pushpa, and Kanmune from Sachein, which all feature captivating openings.

“Even now, I do not view myself strictly as a music composer. I enjoy attending films with friends and colleagues, as it fosters a connection with the cinematic experience and allows us to celebrate the joy it brings,” he adds.

While he remains discreet regarding details about Pushpa 3 or Pushpa: The Rampage, the composer assures that, true to its title, it will be an extraordinary experience. “It will certainly exceed what you have heard in Pushpa 1 and 2. Although we have yet to commence work on the third instalment, it will surpass the offerings of the first two parts.”

On hate criticism: I see it as one-way traffic

DSP, who garnered significant acclaim for his work on Pushpa 2, faced considerable criticism for his contributions to Kanguva, the latest Tamil film featuring Suriya. Regarding his approach to criticism, the musician remarked, “I perceive it as a one-way street and continue with our endeavours. We cannot absorb every opinion due to time constraints. Regardless of our efforts, some individuals will appreciate our work while others will not. If you are genuinely concerned about my actions and believe I have erred, I would expect you to address it directly rather than publicly on social media. Merely commenting does not warrant a personal response from us.”

Elaborating further, DSP expressed that he received substantial acclaim for the song Manippu from Kanguva, emphasizing that the album holds a special place in his heart. “Many fans of Suriya sir enjoyed it, and after its release, he engaged me in a conversation for approximately 30 minutes. It is important to recognize that even a mediocre film can achieve success, and conversely, a good film may not. We must remain grounded and self-aware. I possess the maturity to comprehend the immaturity of others and extend my respect towards it.”

Following the release of Kanguva on streaming platforms, DSP expressed his gratitude for the overwhelmingly positive feedback received, stating that he takes pride in the film and will not distance himself from it due to a few unfavourable reviews. He remarked, “The outcomes of projects are often unpredictable, and no one possesses the foresight to accurately forecast them. Each member of the team dedicated significant effort to Kanguva, and I hold deep respect for all who contributed.”

Currently, DSP is preparing for the upcoming releases of Thandel, featuring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, as well as Kubera, starring Dhanush. With anticipation building for these films, DSP concluded, “Thandel's soundtrack is sure to evoke numerous goosebumps, while Kubera promises to deliver many unexpected elements.”
