Following the success of Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, Netflix is set to release Khakee: The Bengal Chapter. The series is produced by Friday Storytellers, with Neeraj Pandey serving as the showrunner. Debatma Mandal and Tushar Kanti Ray are the directors of the project. Recently, the cast and crew gathered in Kolkata for the trailer launch, where they discussed the continuation of the Khakee franchise.
Saswata Chatterjee on working with Neeraj Pandey
Saswata Chatterjee portrays Shankar Barua, also referred to as Bagha, in the series. A familiar figure in Bengali cinema, he gained prominence in Bollywood through his portrayal of the sinister assassin Bob Biswas in the Vidya Balan-led film Kahaani. In Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, he continues to embody a character with complex moral dimensions.
During the trailer launch, Saswata expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with Neeraj Pandey, mentioning that he had long aspired to work with the esteemed director. When asked what specifically drew his attention to Pandey's work, Saswata shared in an exclusive conversation with HT, “It is truly the selection of his themes! Who else would dare to create a film titled A Wednesday? Such an original idea! It resonates deeply, and when Anupam Ji states, ‘Main naam batana nahi chahta kyuki naam mein log mazhab dhund lete hain,’ it reflects a profound understanding. The ability to craft such poignant lines and films that resonate with audiences is essential. I have little patience for films that merely showcase their brilliance. I prefer a packed house to accolades from film festivals.”
On his character in Khakee The Bengal Chapter
Speaking about his character in Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, Saswata said, “It is really an intense part, but it is not antagonistic totally. He is a grey-shaded person. When everyone will see my introduction, they will feel he is a dangerous man, that he is a killer. But then, when they see him sitting beside his dead mother's body- in that scene, he is also a genuine person. He is sensitive as well, so he is a very complex character. What human beings are, in a way, because we all have grey shades. We have everything inside us, but kya zyaada hai ye determine karte hain aadmi kya hai (What has more weight determines what kind of a person we are). No one is black, or no one is white. As actors, we have to tap into what is required for a part.”
Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, also starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jeet, Ritwik Bhowmik, Chitrangada Singh, Pooja Chopra, and Parambrata Chatterjee, premieres on Netflix on March 20.
