For many years, AR Rahman has held the position of the most distinguished and commercially successful music composer in the nation. His albums have consistently topped the charts, enabling him to command fees in the crores for each film. Nevertheless, in 2023, a young newcomer surpassed him to become India's highest-paid musician, demanding nine figures for a single project, all accomplished at the age of 33.
India's highest-paid musician
Anirudh Ravichander, a renowned music composer celebrated for his work in Tamil cinema, including films such as Jailer, Petta, Master, and Vikram, holds the distinction of being the highest-paid music composer in India, and by extension, the highest-paid musician as well. In 2023, he made his debut in Bollywood with the musical score for the film Jawan, featuring Shah Rukh Khan. According to News 18, Anirudh commanded a fee of ₹10 crore for this project, surpassing AR Rahman's typical fee range of ₹7-8 crore per film. It is noteworthy that Anirudh subsequently reduced his fees for later projects, as reported by Times of India, charging ₹8 crore each for the films Leo and Jailer. Nevertheless, he continues to be recognized as India's highest-paid composer.
How Anirudh beat stalwarts
Anirudh has played a pivotal role in introducing a fresh sound to Tamil cinema music. The composer is recognized for his innovative approach, blending techno music with the authentic personas of actors to create background scores that resonate with their characters. This unique style has enabled him to craft scores for prominent stars such as Rajinikanth in Petta and Jailer, Kamal Haasan in Vikram, Vijay in Master and Leo, and Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan. He has established himself as a key figure within the circles of many leading actors, including SRK, Rajinikanth, and Vijay. The popularity of some of his tracks, particularly Hukum from Jailer, has significantly enhanced his reputation in the industry. As a result of his success, Anirudh has been able to increase his fees, now charging ₹10 crore for a film at the age of 33.
In contrast, other Indian music composers such as Pritam, Vishal-Shekhar, MM Keeravani, and Yuvan Shankar Raja typically charge less than ₹5 crore per film. Singers generally earn even less, with fees ranging from ₹15 to 20 lakh per song, and it is uncommon for their earnings to reach a crore for a single film. However, for private albums, some singers, like Diljit Dosanjh, can earn over a crore, which he frequently achieves.
