In this context, despite Bollywood's prominence in the Indian film industry, one unconventional filmmaker from the South surpasses all others. With a total of 12 films, he has generated over ₹4000 crore in box office earnings.

India's highest-grossing film director

SS Rajamouli, a prominent figure in Telugu cinema, holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing director in the annals of Indian film history. His remarkable achievement is largely attributed to the phenomenal success of his pan-India Baahubali series and the internationally acclaimed RRR. In addition to these blockbusters, his earlier works, such as Eega and Magadheera, have collectively amassed a staggering ₹4250 crore at the box office. Notably, ₹2400 crore of this total has been generated solely from the two Baahubali films. With such impressive box office figures, Rajamouli stands unrivaled among his peers in India.

The men that Rajamouli beat

Rohit Shetty is recognized as the highest-grossing filmmaker in Hindi cinema, with his films achieving nearly ₹3200 crore in box office revenue. He ranks second in India's top 10 filmmakers, following Rajamouli. Together, they are the sole directors whose films have surpassed the ₹3000 crore mark. Sukumar, known for his work on "Pushpa," occupies the third position with a total gross exceeding ₹2650 crore. Hindi directors Siddharth Anand and Nitesh Tiwari complete the top five, each amassing over ₹2400 crore in cumulative earnings. Additionally, Rajkumar Hirani and Prasanth Neel are the only other Indian filmmakers to have crossed the ₹2000 crore threshold.

Prominent figures such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar, and Mani Ratnam do not feature in the top 10, with their cumulative grosses ranging between ₹1300 crore and ₹1700 crore.

Rajamouli's 100% success rate

Throughout his career, SS Rajamouli has helmed 12 films, each achieving commercial success at the box office. Notably, with only two exceptions, every film he has directed has surpassed the earnings of its predecessor. His last three films have been recognized as all-time blockbusters, while two additional films have also been classified as superhits or blockbusters. Currently, the director is engaged in his upcoming project featuring Mahesh Babu, which is said to also include Priyanka Chopra in the cast. However, no title or release date has been disclosed at this time.
