Indian Influencer Criticized for Calling Mawra Hocane’s Wedding Lehenga ‘Tacky’
1 month ago | 5 Views
Indian influencer Sufi Motiwala has gained recognition for his insights on celebrity fashion. He frequently posts videos in which he evaluates the outfits worn by celebrities at various events. In a recent video, he expressed his disapproval of Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane's wedding attire, following her marriage to actor Ameer Gilani.
In the video, Sufi described the material of Mawra's lehenga as 'tacky' and 'questionable.' He remarked, “This is what occurs when one exists in a realm devoid of Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra. The choice of fabric is indeed subpar,” the influencer stated.
Following the posting of the clip on Instagram, numerous individuals criticized Sufi for his apparent lack of awareness. Pakistani stylist Zahra Sarfraz even shared a video condemning Sufi for failing to grasp the emotional significance of Mawra's appearance.
‘Why is it so difficult to extend the same respect’
In the video, Zahra elaborated on the inspiration behind the wedding attire of the Sanam Teri Kasam actor, which was entirely designed around her mother-in-law's dupatta. “Sufi, I find it perplexing that we offer you so much respect, love, and support. Why is it so challenging for you to reciprocate that respect towards us? You seem unable to grasp the significance of sentimental value… Remarkably, Mawra utilized her mother-in-law's wedding dupatta as the foundation for her entire ensemble. I suppose that is a privilege afforded to those with a strong personality,” she remarked.
Zahra criticized Sufi for failing to recognize Mawra's unique style and for limiting herself to just two or three designer labels. "What I consider truly lacking is the inability to embrace originality, confining oneself to a select few designers, and deriving satisfaction from a single brand," she remarked.
"I would like to share another intriguing aspect about us: we can experience the same sense of elegance in a small jewellery set as we do in a larger one," Zahra elaborated. "For those unfamiliar, this particular set belonged to Mawra's grandmother-in-law, who wore it and celebrated its beauty most exquisitely."
How did the internet react?
The online community also expressed discontent regarding Sufi's remarks. One user commented, “Have you not explored the fashion history of the subcontinent? Why are you unable to appreciate a vintage aesthetic?” Another individual stated, “Certain individuals will never grasp the true essence of sentiments, relational values, and profound connections.” Additionally, a comment noted, “This was unwarranted. Consider perspectives beyond those of Sabya and Manish.”
