Imtiaz Ali made it clear that his goal for Amar Singh Chamkila was to highlight the artist's passion for music. He didn't want the film to turn into a detective story about the circumstances surrounding the singer's murder. In a chat with Komal Nahta on his YouTube channel, Imtiaz explained why he chose to include the murder scene in the opening minutes..

In the chat, when Imtiaz was asked why he included the murder scene at the start, he explained in Hindi: “Initially, I wrote that this would happen, but then I questioned why I did that. What I appreciate is that this isn’t a suspense film. I didn’t want the murder to be the main focus. My goal was to steer clear of making it an investigation or a crime movie. Instead, I aimed for it to be a music film. I wanted to wrap up those events quickly so that both I and the audience could shift our attention to his love story intertwined with music.”

He explained why he chose not to include the murder in the final moments of the film. “I wanted to avoid making the audience wonder if something was going to happen to him. If I had left that in, viewers would have sensed the tension about whether he would survive or not. So, I aimed to shift their focus away from that. Plus, it helped create a deeper sympathy for the character who knows his fate.”

Amar Singh Chamkila tells the true story of the Punjabi singer and his wife, who were tragically killed at a young age. Diljit Dosanjh portrayed Chamkila, while Parineeti Chopra played his wife, Amarjot. The film premiered on Netflix on April 12 of last year.
